Weddings That Waste Less: Angela + Kyle, St. Petersburg, FL

This past Earth Day our amazing BSB vendor, Kera Photography, captured the wedding day of one SUPER GREEN couple. Angela and Kyle came together at an amazing non-profit venue, St. Petersburg Woman’s Club, to celebrate their love for each other, their community, and their environment. They intentionally choose not to purchase any new decorations for their wedding and up-cycled and thrifted the entire wedding day vision. They also used biodegradable plates and utensils and collaborated with the caterer to incorporate as many seasonal and locally sourced foods as possible. BONUS POINTS: their cake was completely vegan, and they worked with a local brewery to make the wedding day brews on tap vs. serving non-local canned/bottled brands! AngelaandKyle-656 Not only is wasting less and going green a large part of their lifestyles, they also serve the community in huge ways. Kyle is on the board of a non-profit called Creative Clay, they provide resources and supplies to make art available for adults with disabilities. Angela also volunteers for several organizations supporting the St. Petersburg, FL area. Take a peek at this sweet day, you can almost smell the potting soil from here. Sustainably Stylized Wedding Inspiration: Celebrate with BRIGHT purpose!

Weddings are amazing, no? They are full to the brim of ALL the feelings and ALL the great things – grandmothers dancing, tears of joy, beautiful voices, hand holding, delicious eats, I could go on forever. They are a time to do nothing else but enjoy the moments you are given to celebrate life. This put aside, Black Sheep Bride is committed to sharing weddings and inspiritation that encourage and incorporate ways to plan a wedding that actually benefits the larger community and offer a sense of greater purpose. Meigan Canfield Photography and a team of extremely talented Colorado wedding vendors recently planned a styled shoot for this purpose in mind. They wanted to inspire couples to think beyond the standard planning, to consider how to waste less, to know the vendors that “give back” and only use cruelty free products, and to want their wedding to stand for something bigger. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto77 Here is a list of the vendors and how they give back: Photographer :  Meigan Canfield Photography ~ Meagan strives to connect with the industry vendors who “give back” or neutralize their carbon footprint as much as possible, so that she can recommend their services and grow a more sustainable, “green” wedding industry. She also uses an eco-friendly printing company for wedding albums and prints (Loktah). MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto217 Event Designers : ENLY Event Design ~ Is responsible for almost all of the background design in this shoot. They are a team of two beauties who strive to create modern and minimalistic, contemporary pieces. For the shoot, they created their pieces with a “greener” approach considering its lifespan and the materials used during creation. For the shoot, they created a ceremony backdrop that was made from recyclable coasters. They used milk paint (an environmentally friendly paint) to paint the coasters shades of blue. They also hand built the bar, which they created using wood and paper tiles that were made from 100% recycled post-consumer paper, designed and packed to minimize the carbon footprint. These can be fully recycled after their use. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto215 Venue: Blanc ~ Is an old industrial warehouse in the heart of Downtown Denver. The venue was originally built in 1890, and was multi-purposed as both a tool shop and an automotive repair yard. It has since been up-cycled and renovated into a beautiful multi-space location venue for all types of events. It is the perfect venue for a sustainable wedding, because it has been recycled into a modern space which offers a variety of different areas within. There is a naturally lit indoor room that can be used for ceremonies, a beautifully landscaped backyard with a court and cherry blossoms for cocktail hour and a barn that can be used for dinner and receptions. This also eliminates any unnecessary travel from place to place during the event. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto258 Dress Shop: A&Bé Bridal Shop ~ offers a variety of wedding dresses made in different parts of the globe. For this shoot, A&Be offered a dress by the Designer Rebecca Schoneveld (BSB National Partner). Rebecca Schoneveld is based in Brooklyn, New York and all of her designer dresses are handmade by sustainable seamstresses and created using natural fabrics, this eliminates the need for polluting factory work. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto10 Cake Designer: Sugar ~ Offers vegan and organic options for her cakes and deserts. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto69 Florist: Boulder Blooms ~ Strives to showcase local floral product grown in and around the Boulder area, encouraging their daily customers and couples to consider flowers that are in season. They also participate in the Zero Waste Program, recycling and composting more than half their waste material. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto234 Makeup: Alli B Artistry LLC ~ Uses only animal-friendly and vegan makeup brands. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto23 Hair: My Hair Trip Salon ~ Denver’s only green organic certified hair salon. They use the most sustainable, non toxic, cruelty free, hair products. My Hair Trip Salon has just partnered with Green Circle Salons which recycles or finds an up-clycled use for most of their waste from hair clippings, foils, color, styrofoam, and even broken appliances. They are committed to creating as carbon neutral of a salon environment as possible. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto325 Ring Designer: Bucura Designs ~ is owned by a self taught silversmith who locally hand-makes all of her own creations. Most of the stones she uses come from small shops and artisan stone shapers she finds while on trips or donated from other artists who have no use for them. Other stones come from the Rio Grande shop, a go to online source dedicated to supporting the jeweler. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto53 Jewelry Designer: Purpose Jewelry ~ Their jewelry is handcrafted by survivors of modern-day slavery, empowering them through freedom, employment and financial stability. 100% of the proceeds benefit International Sanctuary, a non-profit that provides holistic care for young women rescued from human trafficking. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto355 Invitation Designer: Paper Plates Press ~Created a lovely wedding invitation suite for the shoot. It was printed on 100% recycled cotton paper using a vintage letterpress. Instead of doing a traditional RSVP card that is returned by mail, they printed one that directed guests online to RSVP, to reduce the carbon footprint. In the suite, they included wildflower seeds with the invitation as a gift for guests to plant in their gardens. MeiganCanfieldPhotography_Blanc041316MeiganPhoto34 Ice Cream: High Point Creamery (Ice Cream Truck) ~ Uses the finest and freshest ingredients (Fresh fruit? Yes, please) to hand-make all of their own ice cream. There are no artificial flavors or coloring, and they offer a couple of vegan options as well. Going Green with Zass Design, Upcycled Jewelry for Every Occasion

Name one color that doesn’t literally represent it’s shade? The answer is: GREEN!
Images by Amber Robinson | Zass Spring Summer
Being ‘Green’ means so much more than the shade itself, it means wasting-less, and being intentional with our consumerism and how it impacts our environment. With today being St. Patrick’s Day, we thought it would be the perfect day to introduce you to an amazingly GREEN company called Zass Design we met last fall, in Raleigh, NC (thanks to our BSB Vendor, Images by Amber Robinson). They make a wide variety of upcycled jewelry from discarded trash, aluminum cans, magazines, vinyl records, and other sources. My personal favorite from their collection are the Wedding Invitation Studs, made from your Big Day’s paper goods!

Their philosophy in every creation is to respect the environment and the fundamental principles of eco-design: reduce, reuse, recycle. Every piece has a history, a starting point. Each piece is individual with a unique past, present and a future story of its own.

More of What Matters, Featuring: So Kind Registry **Editor Note: Thank you SoKind Registry for your ongoing support as a National Partner and believer in the BSB Mission!** bride Friends and family. That’s what wedding receptions boil down to, right? It would be a lot less work and cost if a wedding consisted solely of a ceremony. No need to worry about finding a venue or coordinating entertainment. No need to worry about menus or seating arrangements. Yet despite the hassle, many people still choose to commemorate one of life’s biggest events with a celebration. Meredith9 Why? Because, as humans, we’re hardwired for connection. Connection is what gives our lives purpose and meaning. And connection is what we crave when we celebrate momentous occasions. We want our loved ones to share in our joy and to support us with their presence. Yet U.S. consumer culture has created an expectation in this country that weddings must be extravagant affairs in order to be special, thereby distorting some of the most important milestones of our lives. Celebrations that should be joyful and meaningful are now often occasions that generate stress, waste, and debt. Sunset chaser SoKind Registry is a registry service designed to provide options for those of us who want to plan celebrations that reflect our lifestyles, promote our values, and enhance our lives. SoKind is for people who want to host more environmentally friendly celebrations, as well as for folks who simply refuse to start a new chapter in their lives with a mountain of debt. It’s for people who don’t view their wedding as an opportunity to impress, but rather as an opportunity to involve their friends and family in one of the most important occasions of their lives. fashion-men-vintage-colorful So go ahead, be creative. What gifts do you truly want? Donations to your favorite charity? Home renovation help? Catering help for the big day? A museum membership? Through SoKind, you can register for gifts of time, experience, and skill, as well as traditional material gifts and secondhand items. The registry is entirely customizable, so the possibilities are endless! Here’s to more fun and less stuff… to more joy and less stress… and to more love and less waste!
