Eco- Friendly Wedding that Gives Back: Ashley and Chris

Happy Earth Day to all of you! What a great day to encourage and remind us to use our planet wisely and with more intention every day of our lives and not just once a year! We wanted to feature a wedding that was sensitive to sustainability, giving back and eco-friendly alternatives and we found just the one, courtesy of our amazing BSB vendor, Oak and Honey Events. View More: http://janelleputrichphotography.pass.us/wedding-submission-ashley-chris We love what the bride had to share about why it was important to have a sustainable wedding day: ‘Chris and I have always been very eco-minded, but after purging most of our belongings and moving to Costa Rica in 2012, we had a whole new appreciation for reducing waste in the world. Chris proposed with an estate ring from the 1930s—we both love that it has a story and a history. From there, we found Melanie Tindell of Oak and Honey Events, who specializes in sustainable events, and she guided us toward a day we could really be proud of!’ View More: http://janelleputrichphotography.pass.us/wedding-submission-ashley-chris The couple was committed to keeping their wedding as environmentally friendly as possible by up-cycling a lot of their wedding decor, as well as sourcing locally. Spice of Life Catering provided delicious, sustainable, and locally grown food for the couple’s big day. Ashley and Chris also re-sold their wedding items at The Recycled Wedding Boutique, so that other couples could give their items a second life. In addition, prior to their wedding, the couple volunteered at the national park at which they were to be married, planting trees. Real Weddings That Gives Back: Julia + Matthew, Iowa

Instagram is a MAGICAL place, full of inspiration, empowerment and most importantly… new friends! Julia, from J. Lovan Goods, ran across Black Sheep Bride on Instagram over a year ago, before she was even married and we have been anxiously awaiting the day to share her intentional, heartfelt, and socially conscious wedding with you ever since! Read their ‘Giving Back Wedding Story’ below.

‘Matthew and I both try to live simply, but in different ways. He’s an old-soul curmudgeon who uses a quality bag or pair of shoes until it’s on its last thread, while I compost even tiny fabric scraps and try to upcycle anything.
I wanted a unique and beautiful wedding, but I also wanted to make it as sustainable as possible. My greatest wedding planning asset was my sewing, craft skills and help from my mom. I designed and created my dress, the bridesmaids dresses, the ties and vests, while my sister-in-law, Lorraine Goddard, made an adorable matching mini-wedding dress for the flower girl, my new niece Lucy, as well as the ringbearer’s pillow.’

‘We bought our wedding invites that I absolutely adored, from the graphic designer Pretty Little Papers. Other things I loved buying from small businesses were our wedding favors, they were wildflower seed paper hearts made by my friends at Fancy That Loved. I hand-lettered a love quote by Mother Theresa.’ _IMG_3280

‘Matthew purchased my lovely rose gold, fair trade, conflict-free wedding ring from Chicago-based Rosado’s Box.’1D8A5991
‘I did my makeup myself after hours of research on organic makeup and watching tutorials. I have an all-natural makeup setting spray I made myself that is amazing and makes my skin dewy and younger-looking.
Being so picky about my dress, six days before the wedding, I got a little too anxious, so I took it apart and started on a new top, but in the end used the original design anyway! I finished the dress the night before the wedding. (And on a whim had the idea to have my mom hand stitch a belt onto it. She finished 30 minutes before showtime.)’

‘My bridesmaids and friends went above and beyond to arrange our bouquets the day before the wedding, under the direction of my special-events planner and bridesmaid, Dawn of Los Angeles-based, Tribe of Asher. I got items like ribbon from Something Blue, a bridal consignment shop in Ankeny, Iowa.’1D8A67311D8A6797_S8A8140
‘I love cake, so I wanted to have a whole cake bar. We had 11 different cakes with buttercream frosting to choose from, all thanks to my amazing friends, Melissa and Dianne. The cutest thing I saw was a few small finger skid marks on one of the cakes. Some little guests were hungry I guess! Melissa also made a gluten and dairy free chocolate cake that I heard was gone in the blink of an eye.’ S8A8454
‘Years ago I saw photos of a crepe paper wisteria tree that my über creative friend Ruthi made for Anthropologie, and I knew I wanted to include that in my wedding. For months I twisted purple and lavender crepe paper while I Skyped with Matthew (he lived in California while I lived in Iowa), with no end in sight! My family and friends helped finish it, and I just love how it looked hanging from the huge copper tree at Tournament Club of Iowa.’

Real Wedding that Give Back: Kim & Ben- Weston Red Barn Farm, Missouri

There is nothing more rewarding than finding stories about amazing couples that have embraced the sheer impact their wedding day can have on those around them… Kim and Ben, YOU GET US + WE GET YOU!  We are truly so inspired by the sustainable and socially conscious choices you made on your Big Day! Thanks to Image Clairity for sharing their wedding images and the ‘Giving Back Story’ of their wedding with us! The Groom was just beginning his Master’s program in Sustainability and it came in quite handy, read below about all the ways they choose to be intentional and as locally sourced as possible… Bira_Bira_Imageclairity_CM14301dug000604R10152 Bira_Bira_Imageclairity_CM14301dug000604R6084 Kim’s family grew the flowers at home and Kim and her bridesmaids each assembled their own bouquets. Kim is a childhood leukemia survivor so she purchased her gown at a Brides Against Breast Cancer Event-where all the proceeds went toward supporting breast cancer patients and their families.
Kim’s Ring was from her Grandmother’s and her veil was hand-sewn from her mother’s dress, as well.

For Vendors: Strategizing Giving Back with Your Business

In the last year and a half we have been at this wonderful thing called Black Sheep Bride, we have received hundreds and hundreds of applications from vendors sharing ways they give back. It is always so impressive and inspiring, but I am always left intrigued by the ways people give so differently. Some are liberal with their giving and choose to donate, serve, help out whenever they see the opportunity arise, while others a bit more strategic in their giving and have a very thought out plan on how their business will effectively help others throughout the year!
 BLACKSHEEPBRIDE (50 of 61)
There are 3 basic ways your business can begin giving back right now! It is up to the business owner to identify in what ways they want to give. Here is the breakdown:
1. Using your Time/Skill to serve others, ex. if you are a photographer donating your photography skills to capture a charity event;
2. Using your Product, ex. donating x amount of cupcakes to a charity each month;
3. Using your Profit and donating to a cause directly related to you, your passions and convictions.
 11071093_10155628369725601_4991560581173322944_n-2
In whatever way you choose to give, make sure you share your giving, write about it, capture the giving, not only do potential clients want to see your business is involved in the community, you could very well start a movement of giving in your own little circle of influence. IT’S WORTH IT!

Kate Franzen, Glint Events
Our team at Glint Events takes time out each month to volunteer at FeedMore in Richmond, VA.  Whether it’s packing up lunches in backpacks for kids or assembling meals to be delivered to those in need, we make sure to be there every last Wednesday of the month with our hairnets, aprons, and gloves.  We are thankful for all that we have, so we understand the importance of giving our time to make sure others can get what they may not be lucky enough to have. In the world of event planning, it can be easy to get lost in the unnecessary purchases and emotional decisions, so giving back to the community helps to keep us grounded. Not only that, but it’s a nice team-building activity and it gets us out of the office for an afternoon while still doing something meaningful.

 Audrey Isaac, 100 Candles
We take pride in our community involvement and are always looking for ways to give back. Most recently, we donated  candles for a vigil to honor the victims of the San Bernardino tragedy. In addition, we donated candles as of late for a memorial in Hollywood to commemorate John Lennon’s birthday. We’ve also partnered with the Mea’Alofa Autism Support Center, where they use our hydro orbs in sensory classes with children.

Jennifer Taylor, Taylor’d Events
Each year in Seattle, we have a group that creates a wedding garage sale  so couples have an area location to donate. The proceeds go to Get Hitched Give Hope, which gives money to the Young Survivor Coalition and Dream Foundation. In the past, we have also donated on behalf of our clients to Northwest Harvest, which is a statewide hunger relief agency in Washington.
