5 Tips to Planning a Socially Conscious Wedding Day!

We’d like to tell you planning a wedding is all rainbows and puppy dogs, but sadly.. its not.. It costs a whole – lotta- moolah. I’m sure you’re already aware of this, but what if we told you … Your wedding planning dollars could help others around the corner and around the world… and it can be so much more than skimping on favors and giving your guests a ‘Sorry letter’ explaining they won’t be getting a gift- ha!

The world of Socially Conscious Wedding Planning is so much more than you think. There are vendors, products, design inspiration at your finger tips that will help you take your WEDDING CHANGE and make WORLD CHANGE! And we’re here to tell you how.

1. Seek Vendors that Give Back

The average U.S. wedding costs nearly $30,000. With over 2.6 Million weddings performed in the US annually (and growing)… that is a lot of wedding dollars! BUT… What if the vendors you choose for your big day ALL donated 10% to charity? Wouldn’t that lift a little bit of the burden in your planning process knowing you’re investing in wedding professionals that value helping others too.

Thankfully, we have a list of vendors that are committed to helping others and have pledged to give back 10% of their time, product or profits to charity.

2. Invest in Socially Conscious Products

In today’s culture of World Changing Millennial’s… It is not hard to find consumer products founded with a mission of giving back: TOMS, Sevenly, Feed, Warby Parker, Lush, and the list goes on.

The same socially conscious rules apply for wedding consumerism! There is a whole world of socially conscious, consumer minded, AND wedding related products out there at your disposal, with a little digging… You can find really amazing/high quality wedding day swag, with super big purpose. 3.  Advocate from the Heart

Go Big or Go Home, is our motto at BSB!

If you aren’t truly passionate about something, then there is no reason to blindly support it.

Reflect on what you and your significant other are most passionate about and incorporate it into your Big Day. Maybe its rescue dogs, disaster recovery, human rights, faith based organizations, non-faith based organizations, veterans, education, human trafficking, homelessness. Whatever the passion, share your heart with your guest. Here are few ways:

  1. Open a fund raising registry (or crowd funding page) via: So Kind Registry,, and I Do Foundation, Go Fund Me
  1. Incorporate the Giving Back Theme into your wedding design. Ex. Education… add books, apples, chalkboards.

They fell in love and he surprised her with a proposal while they were feeding the homeless , they’ve built so many amazing relationships with their ‘Downtown neighbors’ they made them special guests of honor and served them first on their wedding day.

4. Post Wedding Giving

We often times don’t think about it but there is a lot of waste/excess that goes into a wedding celebration, reduce that waste by donating your leftover, not just food, to help others. Here are few ways to help:

  1. Left over flowers donate to Repeat Roses, they will deliver to nursing homes, hospitals, etc. the next day.
  2. Food: Find a homeless shelter willing to take your left over meals.
  3. Duplicate gifts: Half-way houses are always in need of home goods.
  4. Recycle what you can- Paper goods, Glass, Metal, Plastic… it can all be put to use, also consider
  5. Consider donating your dress to a consignment store, or organization that assists a cause (ex. Brides Against Breast Cancer).

Couple volunteers for Repeat Roses to pick up flowers after someone’s beautiful day to be delivered to those less fortunate, at hospitals, nursing homes and Ronald McDonald houses.

5. Don’t stop giving back!

Make it a part of your new marriage’s foundation, so that as you grow together in love, you are also growing in loving others.

Back Story: I, Danielle/founder of Black Sheep Bride, also own a wedding photography business. A few years ago I was collecting shoes for a shoe drive and booked a wedding simply because the mother of this lovely lady, pictured above, was a teacher at one of the schools collecting shoes for our drive. We photographed her amazing wedding day and a year later, she came with me to help the very orphanages that I was collecting shoes for, in West Africa.
